Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance fuel injection characteristics by a method wherein the displacement of a nozzle needle provided at a fuel injection nozzle of a Diesel engine is controlled by controlling the pressures supplied to two pressure oil chambers of a needle holder, and the control of the pressures is effected by two directional-control valves.
CONSTITUTION: Compressed fuel is supplied from a fuel compressor 10 to an oil sump 21 at the fuel injection nozzle 17 and is fully charged. In this condition, when a solenoid-operated type two- position three-port directional control valve 37 is switched over to the I-position side, the pressure in the first pressure oil chamber 29a of the nozzle holder 25 is rapidly reduced to zero, so that the nozzle needle 19 in the injection nozzle 17 is moved upward and a nozzle hole 20 is opened. In thisinstant, a directional control valve 38 of the same construction as that of the valve 37 is in II- position and the pressure in the second pressure oil chamber 29b is low. When the valve 38 is switched over from II-position to I-position, the pressure in the chamber 29b is rapidly increased tosurpass the force lifting up the needle 19 and to push a piston 27b downward, so that the needle 19 is seated on a valve seat to close the nozzle hole 20. Accordingly, the period of time from the pressure fall in the chamber 29a to the pressure rise in the chamber 29b constitutes the fuel injection time, resulting in an improvement of the fuel injection characteristics.
