Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an activated cathode having low hydrogen overvoltage at the time of electrolyzing water or alkali metallic halide by providing a covering layer consisting of platinum group metals or their oxide on a covering layer of Ni (alloy) plating provided on an iron metallic substrate.
CONSTITUTION: After pretreatment such as grit blasting is applied on the surface of an iron metallic substrate of iron, mild steel or the like, Ni or Ni alloy (preferably, alloy of Ni and iron, one or more kinds of Co, W) is plated on the surface thereof. This plating method is preferably an electroless plating method in order to obtain the dense covering layer of less pinholes, and the thickness of the covering layer is preferably about 5W20μm. Next, the 2nd covering layer consisting of platinum group metals (pt, Rh, etc.) or their oxide is provided on this covering, whereby the intended electrode for electrolysis is obtained. The thickness of the 2nd covering layer is about 0.5W1.0μm.
