PURPOSE:To eliminate variations in the tension of a web and thereby prevent breakage of paper from occurring due to a needle cut by a method wherein a dancer roller contacting with the web is provided on the upstream side of a folding cylinder of a two-cylinder type folding machine, and the dancer roller is relieved of its tension at the time of a paper gripping movement. CONSTITUTION:When the web 25 drawn out downwardly from a nipping roller 24 is wound around a cutting and folding cutter cylinder 22 through the dancer roller 34 and the cylinders 22, 23 are rotated, a gripping plate 30 grips the web 25 by cooperating with a gripping base 31. At this moment, the web 25 is pulled by an amount corresponding to a gripping margin, and a deficiency in paper length is brought about. However, since a cam follower 35 is faced to a large- diameter part 36a of a timing cam 36 by timing-setting of the part 36a, a roller lever 33 is rotated and the dancer roller 34 is separated from the web 25, so that the web 25 is slackened to compensate for the deficiency in paper length due to the gripping margin.
