Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover and utilize an ABS resin by separating the resin from adhering metal, by adding a non-solvent to a methylene chloride soln. of the resin to which the metal adheres to lower the viscosity, separating the metal, and recovering the solvent and the non-solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An ABS resin to which a metal adheres is mechanically crushed into a size of 15mm, and dissolved in methylene chloride in an amount of about 5 times the amount of said resin at an ordinary temperature. To this viscous liquid is added a non-solvent which boils at least 10°C higher than methylene chloride and does not dissolve the ABS resin at an ordinary temperature. For example, trichloroethylene as said non-solvent in an amount equal to that of said solvent is added to the viscous liquid to lower the viscosity. The resulting soln. is passed through a fine filter to separate the metal. The solvent and the non-solvent are recovered from the filtered soln. under a reduced pressure in a jacketed closed kettle, whereby ABS resin particles having a diameter of 3W5mm can be recovered.
