Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect the exfoliation of a magnetic tape, by a method wherein the signal recorded in one field of the magnetic tape is played back in two fields and subjected to the envelope detection, and the detection signal and a reference signal are compared with each other. CONSTITUTION:A pulse obtained from a position detecting head 16 for detecting the recording-playback position is fed to a control circuit 21. The head changeover signal 21A obtained is fed to a recording circuit 22. The recording start signal 20A obtained by making a recording switch 20 ON is fed to the recording circuit 22 and further supplied through a head changeover gate 30 to video heads 13, 14 to record a signal only for one field. Next, with a switch SW19 connected to the playback side, the same signal is alternately played back by the video heads 13, 14 for one field respectively and subjected to the envelope detection. A detection signal 34A is compared with a reference signal 36A for setting an exfoliation level. A comparison output 37A monitors at all times. When exfoliation occurs, an alarm circuit 38 is actuted.
