Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the filterability of by-product gypsum by adding bentonite to a decomposition reaction system in the manufacture of wet process phosphoric acid by a dihydrate-hemihydrate method.
CONSTITUTION: A required amount of bentonite is fed to a decomposition reaction system where phosphate ore is decomposed with sulfuric acid in a decomposition vessel to produce gypsum dihydrate and phosphoric acid. This bentonite reacts with fluorine in the ore and inhibits the formation of hydrofluoric acid as a factor hindering the growth of gypsum crystals. A slurry prepared in the decomposition vessel is separated into product wet process phosphoric acid and gypsum dihydrate contg. P, and org. matter adsorbed bentonite is shiffted to the gypsum side. This bentonite-contg. gypsum is brought into contact with acid in the presence of seed crystals of hemihydrate gypsum in a modifying vessel to convert the gypsum dihydrate into hemihydrate gypsum. The resulting slurry is filtered, and the filtrate is circulated to the decomposition vessel together with a washing soln. used to wash the residual hemihydrate gypsum.
