Abstract

PURPOSE: An aqueous solution of a tetraalkylammonium alkylsulfate is subjected to anion exchange and the product is neutralized with an acid to produce the high-purity titled compound used as a supporting electrolyte in the electroreductive dimerization of acrylonitrile.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of tetraalkyllammonium kalkylsulfate is subjected to anion exchange using a OH-type anion-exchange resin to convert it into its hydroxide and the product is neutralized with an acid to give its tetraalkylammonium salt. Although any anion exchange resin of strong, medium and weak-base type may be employed, a strong-base anion-exchange resin is preferred, because of its large breakthrough exchange ecapacity. A typical example is Amberlite IRA-410.
EFFECT: Tetraalkylammonium sulfate, phosphate, chloride and nitrate are readily obtained simply and inexpensively.
