Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the yield of low-carbon silicochromium by shifting molten silicochromium to a treatment furnace and heat treating the surface layer of the molten metal with a gas flame to effectively reduce the carbon content of the silicochromium.
CONSTITUTION: Molten silicochromium discharged from a refining furnace is freed of slag and shifted to a treatment furnace, where the surface of the molten metal is exposed to a gas flame to burn silicon carbide rising to the surface as well as to prevent the solidification of the molten metal. The treated silicochromium is drawn out of the bottom of the furnace while leaving the surface layer slightly rich in carbon. Thus, silicochromium having about 0.018W0.010% carbon content can be obtd. in a high yield such as ≥ about 80%.
