The optimum operation characteristics setting device of a magnetic recorder and reproduce is provided with a tape-loading detecting means 92a of detecting a magnetic tape being loaded on the magnetic recorder and reproducer body, and the best operation characteristics setting means 20-22, 30, 40, 60, 80, 92b, and 92c which set the best operation characteristics automatically. Those best operation characteristics setting means are started by the 1st recording start command in a period when the magnetic tape is loaded.
