Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled polymer useful as a flocculant by using a small amount of a dispersant and to make the reuse of the dispersant possible, by a method wherein a specified acrylate is suspension-polymerized by using, as the dispersant, ethyl cellulose contacted and treated with an aq. soln. of caustic alkali.
CONSTITUTION: The neutralized salt of a dialkylaminoalkyl (meth)acrylate (e.g. dimethylaminoethyl acrylate hydrochloride) or a mixture of the above compd. and a monomer (e.g. acrylamide) copolymerizable with a quaternized monomer (e.g. β-methacryloyloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride), is suspension-polymerized under a water-in-oil condition in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. H2O2) and in a mixture of a hydrocarbon dispersion medium (e.g. cyclohexane), water and a dispersant by using, as the dispersant, ethylcellulose obtd. by contacting and treating if with 0.1W10wt% (based on the amount of the monomer) aq. causting alkali soln., to produce the titled water-soluble polymer.
