Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a colorless resin suitable for coating excellent in weather resistance, flexibility and adhesion, by reacting a polyhydric alcohol, an aromatic polybasic carboxylic acid and an aliphatic 1,2-epoxy compd. in the resence of a tert. amine or quat. ammonium salt as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The titled resin is obtd. by reacting a polyhydric alcohol (e.g. ethylene glycol), an aromatic polybasic carboxylic acid or its anhydride (e.g. phthalic anhydride) and C6W20 aliphatic 1,2-epoxy compd. (e.g. 1,2-epoxyhexane) in the presence of a tert. amine or quat. ammonium salt. The resulting resin contains 25W45wt% epoxy compd., and has OH value of 50W130KOH mg/g, acid value of 5W10KOHmg/g and Gardner bubble viscosity SWZ5.
EFFECT: Excellent water and chemical resistances.
USE: Useful as polyol component in urethane coating, plasticizer for nitrocellulose lacquer, vehicle for ink and a component of melamine or epoxy baking paint.
