Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having improved strength, by inserting a rodlike base material for the optical fiber in a quartz tube having a SiO2-TiO2 glass film on the outer periphery thereof, and heating and integrating the base material with the quartz tube. CONSTITUTION:Raw materials 3 and 4 for preparing glass (SiCl4 and TiCl4) in the vapor phase are introduced into a burner 5 and burned with H2 gas and O2 gas fed separately, and the resultant SiO2-TiO2 glass is then deposited on the surface of a quartz tube 6 to form a unform glass film 7. A base material 8 for an optical fiber consisting of a core part 1 and a cladding part 2 is inserted in the quartz tube 6, and only the H2 gas and O2 gas are fed into the burner 5. The outside of the quartz tube 6 is then heated to a higher temperature and softened to collapse the quartz tube 6 and integrate the quartz tube 6 with the base material 8 for the optical fiber. The base materal 8 integrated with the quartz tube 6 is then attenuated (drawn) to give the desired optical fiber.
