Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an alkaline battery which has high discharge maintenance voltage and large discharge capacity by using a positive electrode made of manganese dioxide and a negative electrode made of both zinc and zinc oxide, and by charging the battery with a given quantity of electricity. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline battery is constituted by the combination of a positive electrode 1 made of manganese dioxide and carbon, and a negative electrode 6 which is made of zinc and zinc oxide and is added with carboxymethylcellulose. The battery is charged with electricity the quantity of which is equivalent to 0.5-10% of the theoretical electric capacity of the former zinc. The amount of the former zinc oxide is preferred to be 1-5wt% of the former zinc. The charge of the battery increases the X value of the former manganese dioxide represented by MnOx up to around 2.0 to make higher-order manganese dioxide, and increases the open-circuit voltage of the battery; the X value of general electrolytic manganese dioxide is 1.97. The open-circuit voltage doesn't rise to over 1.64V if the battery is charged with much more electricity, since instable matters are produced and these matters return to their stable states. The former zinc oxide consumes hydrogen gas generated from the positive electrode 1 during the charge, and produces zinc. By the means mentioned above, a battery which has high discharge maintenance voltage and provides large discharge capacity can be obtained.
