Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce the resistance to cutting and the heat resulting therefrom and prevent vibration and chatters from being caused by the cutting, by providing the planted cutting segments of an end mill with rake faces convex in the direction of the cutting and by providing the segments with asymmetric convex cutting edges.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of spiral reference lines are set on the peripheral surface of a steel base. Segments 11 (17W22), which are made of a hard tool material and have convex facets at the side of the rake face, are secured at a prescribed spacing on the reference lines to define cutting edge row lines 15 and cutting edge tangent lines 16 like a comb. The phase of the segment 10 on the cutting edge row line 15 in the direction of the axis of rotation of the end mill is sequentially shifted from that of the segment 10 on the preceding cutting edge row line 15. The cutting edges of the segments 10 are overlapped with each other in the direction of rotation of the end mill. The relief angle of each segment 10 is made almost perpendicular to its cutting edge tangent 16 to provide convex cutting edges asymmetric with each other in the direction of cutting.
