Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce an emission time of a semiconductor laser to the necessary minimum, and to extend a life of the semiconductor laser, by controlling emission of the semiconductor laser with start and stop signals of a photosensitive drum. CONSTITUTION:When a drive signal issued at start of a photosensitive drum is applied to the controller 21 to which printing data 14 are fed, the controller 21 applies the drum drive signal through a specified time constant circuit, etc. to the AND gate 22 to which video signals are fed to open the gate 22. Accordingly, when the drum is driven and a rotary mirror for scanning comes to turn stably, a semiconductor laser 1 emits light and characters corresponding to the printing data 14 are formed, and when the drum stops, emission of the laser 1 also stops. The life of the laser 1 is extended by thus controlling a laser emission time to the necessary minimum.
