Abstract
PURPOSE:To execute positioning with high accuracy by a fine interval, by splitting a laser light beam into plural beams by use of a diffraction grating, and coupling them as plural optical spots whose phase has been shifted onto the grating stripes of a position detecting scale. CONSTITUTION:One laser light beam from a semiconductor laser is split into plural laser light beams by a diffraction grating, only a laser light beam having intense light quantity, which is used for detecting a position is made incident to a condensing lens, and this beam is focused as a spot on a position detecting scale 1. When the diffraction grating is rotated and adjusted, 3 condensing spots SP1, SP2 and SP3 which are slightly separated and are shifted in phase by a portion corresponding to a recording information space pitch (m) are obtained. A positioner is positioned by a periodical position signal waveform obtained by plural photodetectors for detecting said plural laser light beams.
