Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain expandable particles which keep their expandability even when they are allowed to stand in the pre-expanded state in atmosphere for a long time, by impregnating a styrene/polyolefin copolymer resin with both a volatile blowing agent and a specified liquid substance.
CONSTITUTION: Expandable particles are obtained by impregnating 100pts.wt. base resin obtained by suspension-polymerizing a styrene monomer with an olefin resin (e.g., PE) in an aqueous medium, with (A) 5W30pts.wt. volatile blowing agent (e.g., propane or butane) and (B) 0.5W5.0pts.wt. normally liquid substance being compatible with the above base resin and having a normal pressure b.p. ≥250°C (e.g., dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl maleate). The impregnation can be carried out by adding the components (A) and (B) to the aqueous medium before, curing or after the above copolymerization reaction, or can be carried out after separation of the base resin after completion of the reaction.
