Abstract

PURPOSE:To find accurately the flow rate of fluid flowing through the line of the underground pipe by delivering ultrasonic waves from an ultrasonic transmitter on the ground surface to the underground pipe and by detecting the maximum frequency shift of the ultrasonic waves which return from the pipe by an ultrasonic receiver on the ground surface. CONSTITUTION:Attachments 2 and 3 are installed along the underground pipe 1 and the ultrasonic transmitter 4 is fitted to the attachment 2, while the ultrasonic receiver 5 is fitted to the attachment 3. Moreover, the receiver 5 is provided with a processing part (not shown in the figure) conducting operational processing of signals received. When ultrasonic waves are emitted from the transmitter 4 to the pipe, the ultrasonic waves passing through the ground are scattered by alien substances in the fluid flowing in the pipe 1 and subjected to frequency shift by the Doppler effect. Since this frequency shift is proportional to the velocity of the fluid flowing through the pipe 1, the maximum frequency shift out of those of the ultrasonic waves returning to the receiver 5 is detected and thereby the velocity of the fluid running through the pipe 1 is found.
