Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an elastomer having excellent moldability, tensile strength, softness, high-temperature properties, appearance, etc., economically, by the stepwise reaction of propylene with other 1-olefin in the presence of a particular catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Propylene and other 1-olefin (e.g. ethylene) are polymerized in two steps in the presence of a catalyst containing (A) a compound of a IV-, V- or VI- group transition-metal of the periodic table (e.g. titanium trichloride) and (B) an organic metal compound of a II- or III- group metal of the periodic table (e.g. diethyl alminum chloride). The reaction conditions are selected to give a copolymer containing 90W99wt% of propylene in the first step, and 20W80% in the second step, and to attain the weight ratio of the polymer obtained in the first step to the one in the second step of (10W40)/(60W90).
