Abstract

PURPOSE:To raise the hardening efficiency of steel plates by generating DC magnetic field in the steel plates in such a way that martensite transformation can be quickly and uniformly caused in the hardening treatment of the steel plates. CONSTITUTION:While feeding a steel plate 2 heated to a given high temperature in the direction of arrow, cooling water is jetted at the steel plate 2 from an inlet spray nozzle 3a and plural spray nozzles 3 for hardening. In this case, plural magnetic field generators 4 are provided in the feeding path of the steel plate and voltage from a DC power source 7 is applied to the steel plate to form a DC magnetic field. By the magnetic field, the magnetic dipole of the steel plate 2 is directed in aligned manner, crystal lattice is homogenized, and martensite transformation occurs quickly and uniformly, whereby raising the hardening efficiency of the steed plate 2 as well as its mechanical strength. Finally, residual magnetic field in the steel plate 2 is eliminated by passing it through a magnetic erasing coil 8 to which AC current is applied.
