Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an odd-shaped or compact and long heat pipe, which has an improved wick adhesion properties, by a method wherein a plurality of layers of a small-gage metal wire are wround around the periphery of a mandrel, the peripheral part thereof is coated with a metal braid, and this is inserted into a metal pipe and compression-formed from the outside into an element pipe for a heat pipe.
CONSTITUTION: Around the periphery of a mandrel 1 of a highly elastic metal, a plurality of layers of a small-gage metal wire 2, such as a piano wire having the same material as said mandrel are wound, and the peripheral part thereof is coated with a metal braid 3. Then, this is inserted into a metal pipe to be an element pipe 4 for a heat pipe and comprssion-formed by means of dies or the like into a given element pipe 4 for a heat pipe. Then, the mandrel 1 is removed, caps are attached to both ends of said pipe 4, which is filled with an operating fluid, and both the ends are sealed to obtain a heat pipe. By said constitution, odd-shaped heat pipes as well as heat pipes of small diameters and large lengths are improved in the wick adhesion properties. Accordingly, a heat pipe of excellent heat transfer properties can be readily obtained.
