Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a solid resol resin with excellent handling property and storability, capable of being stably concentrated by dehydration, by the co-condensation of a phenol and a para-substituted alkylphenol, with an aldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, followed by the dehydrating concentration.
CONSTITUTION: A phenol and 0.1W0.4mol, per mol of the phenol, of a para-substituted alkylphenol, in which the para position is substitutecd by a 2C or higher alkyl group, are co-condensed with an aldehyde in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. The co-condensate obtained is neutralized with a neutralization agent such as a weak acid or a weak acid salt, and concentrated by dehydration, to obtain a solid resol resin. In the reaction of the aldehyde with the phenol and the para- substituted alkylphenol, it is preferable to react the aldehyde with the prar-substituted alkylphenol at the first step and then to react the aldehyde with phenol at the second step, rather than to mix the three components at the same time.
