Abstract

PURPOSE: An aqueous solution of caffeine is added to an aqueous solution of tannins obtained from tea leaves to separate into the free-type and ester-type catechins, then, they are fractionated into each component, thus obtaining economically in a short time the titled substance controlling the viral diseases in plants.
CONSTITUTION: Tea leaves are extracted with warm water or an organic solvent to give an aqueous solution of tannins, to which is added an aqueous solution containing a more amount than the tannins of caffeine to separate into the free-type catechin groups such as epicatechin of formula I and epigallocatechin of formula II and the ester-type catechin such as epicatechin gallate of formula III or epigallocatechin gallate of formula IV and the caffeine is removed. Then, they are fractionated with a column filled with, e.g., Sephadex LH20 using a fractionation solvent, preferably a 4:1:2 mixture of n-butanol, acetone and water, when necessary, each fraction is recrystallized to give each catechin. Each catechin can be obtained simultaneously and the use of toxic substances is unnecessary.
