Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare a phenolic compound in one step, without using the additional process for the regeneration of catalyst, by oxidizing an alkylaromatic compound with molecular oxygen in liquid phase in the presence of a polysulfide under light irradiation. CONSTITUTION:A phenolic compound is prepared in one step without using the additional process for the regeneration of catalyst, by the liquid-phase oxidation of an alkylaromatic compound such as p-cymene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a polysulfide of formula R<1>-Sn-R<2> [R<1> and R<2> are (substituted) hydrocarbon group; n>=2] e.g. bis-(3,4-dicholorophenyl)disulfide under light irradiation. The reaction may be carried out either by adding a mercaptan to the reaction system, or by oxidizing said raw material with molecular oxygen in liquid-phase in the presence of a mercaptan, and when polysulfide is produced in the system, starting the irradiation with light. Both processes are effective to accelerate the oxidation and increase the yield of phenol per consumed mercaptan.
