Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject catalyst having high contact efficiency, high strength as well as less pressure loss by forming the carrier of the packing catalyst for the water-hydrogen isotope exchange reaction into a sheet like form by using a hydrophobic fiber and a hydrophobic powder with a large specific surface area.
CONSTITUTION: As the catalyst used in producing heavy water due to the water- hydrogen isotope exchange reaction, the hydrophobic powder with the specific surface area of 100m2/g such as a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer powder is dispersed in and adhered to the hydrophobic fiber such as a fluorocarbon resin or a polyolefin fiber or both of them are mixed and the resulting compound is molded into the sheet like form to obtain the carrier and a VIII group metal is supported on said carrier to form the catalyst. The obtained catalyst has high activity as well as can be molded to a shape having high contact efficiency and less pressure loss even in a large scale packing column and high strength.
