Abstract

PURPOSE: To reform coal so that the reformed coal can be used as a raw coal for the production of coke for metallurgy, by a method wherein a low-grade coal (e.g. weathered coal, non-caking coal) having little fluidity is wetted with a coal heavy oil and then treated with a petroleum heavy oil.
CONSTITUTION: About 2W50wt% (based on the weight of a low-grade coal) of a coal heavy oil (e.g. creosote oil, anthracene oil, coaltar) is added to a low-grade coal. The mixt. is heated at a temp. ranging from not lower than a m.p. of the coal heavy oil to not higher than 450°C to mix the coal with the oil and to wet the surface of the low-grade coal with the coal heavy oil having wettability. Then 5W 50wt% of a petroleum heavy oil (e.g. straight asphalt, solvent deasphalted asphalt is added to the mixt. The resulting mixt. is heated at a temp. ranging from not lower than a m.p. of the petroleum heavy oil to not higher than 450°C to mix the petroleum heavy oil with the coal and to treat the coal with the petroleum heavy oil. When the resulting wetted coal, after the above treatment is heat-treated at a temp. of 300W450°C for 10W120min, more excellent reformed coal can be obtained.
