Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are 1W9C alkyl or alkoxy).
EXAMPLE: 3-(p-Butoxyphenyl-6(4'-n-butylcyclohexyl)tetrazine.
USE: A nematic liquid crystal compound. Compared with the compound of formula II which is also a liquid crystal, the compound of formula I raises the clearing point of a liquid crystal composition and gives higher dichromatic ratio. The superiority of the compound of formula I to the compound of formula III is higher compatibility with the mother crystal because of the lower melting point and the consequent applicability at a higher concentration.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting 4-substituted benzimide ester hydrochloride with excess 4-trans-substituted cyclohexylamidine hydrochloride and hydrazine hydrate, and dehydrogenating the product with a weak oxidizing agent.
