Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of industrial chemicals such as isobutyl alcohol, in high purity, by subjecting isobutylaldehyde containing n-butylaldehyde as an impurity to aldol condensation thereby selectively reacting the impurity, and distilling the condensation products.
CONSTITUTION: A crude isobutylaldehyde containing n-butylaldehyde as an impurity is subjected to aldol condensation in the presence of an acid or basic catalyst at 0W100°C, pref. 0W60°C, and distilled under reduced or slightly positive pressure. The isobutylaldehyde fraction is selectively distilled out by the process to obtain a high purity objective compound. The acid catalyst is, e.g. a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid, or a solid acid such as sulfonic acid-type cation exchange resin, and the basic catalyst is e.g. an aqueous solution of an alkali hydroxide such as NaOH, 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undecene-7, etc.
