Abstract
PURPOSE:A porous gel resulting from hydrolysis of a metal alkoxide is heat treated in a chlorine-containing atmosphere under light irradiation and sintered to produce an optical glass of low hydoxyl content. CONSTITUTION:A metal alkoxide such as Si(OCH3)4 is mixed with methanol, distilled off water under stirring, and gelation is effected in a thermmostat kept to 20 deg.C. Then, remaining water and methanol is evaporated at 70 deg.C to form a silica gel. The silica gel is placed in a glass making device and treated with chlorine gas at 800 deg.C under irradiation of light from, e.g., a mercury lamp. In comparison with the treatment without light irradiation, the time for dehydroxylation is shortened by about half.
