Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover acetic acid in one stage with low energy, by separation of crotonic acid resulting from oxidation of crotonaldehyde in by-provucts of the vinyl acetate production stage through distillation, and they by azeotropic distillation of acetic anhydrde with aqueous acetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: The by-product solution which is obtained after the elimination of vinyl acetate in the vinyl acetate production stage and contains acetic anhydride, crotonaldehyde and other high-boiling substances is fed to an oxidation reactor to oxidize the crotonaldehyde into crotonic acid, which is removed by distillation. The resulting acetic anhydride is then fed to an azeotropic distillation column with aqueous acetic acid to prepare acetic acid. The crotonaldehyde may be oxidized with an oxidizing agent, e.g. potasiium permanganate or dichromate, or with air or oxygen in the presence of copper acetate or a silver compound, etc. as a catalyst.
