Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain acetic acid in high yield, by the isomerization of methyl formate, in the presence of a nickel catalyst, an iodine compound, an organic compound of an nitrogen family element and CO, in an amount of the iodine element more than equimolar with the nitrogen family element, under mild conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl formate is isomerized in the presence of a nickel catalyst, an iodine compound, an organic compound of an nitrogen family element and CO, in which the molar amount of the iodine compound on the basis of iodine element is more than equimolar with the nitrogen family element in the organic compound of the nitrogen family element preferably 2.0 times or more, at 100W250°C and CO partial pressure of 3W250 atmospheres, to give acetic acid. Ni powder, nickel iodide or acetate may be cited as the nickel catalyst, and an alkyl or acetyl iodide may be cited as the iodine compound. Monomethylamine, triphenylbismuth, etc. may be cited as the organic compound of the nitrogen family element.
