The quantization output of circuit 206 is input to main control part 73 to cause main control part 73 to decide that head 18 has passed through the division point of stripes, and main control part 73 is caused to complete the processing for the first block and start the processing for the second block. Read of the second block is started by detection of the first character, and character data is transmitted to main control part 73. As a result, the data read rate can be enhanced.
