PURPOSE:To prevent silver sludge or silver stain in a developing solution, especially pollution in the case of using an automatic developing machine, by adding 2 specified compounds to the developer in processing a silver halide black and white photosensitive material with the developer containing concentrated sulfite. CONSTITUTION:A developer contains >=0.2mol/l sulfite and a compound represented by formula I in which X is N or methine; Y is N or C; W is S, O, or imino; V is H or SH; when at least one of X and Y is N, and X is methine, W is imino; (n) is O or 1; when Y is N, (n) is O; when Y is C, (n) is 1; and R is H, lower alkyl, halogen, or NO2, and a compound represented by formula II is which Z i H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, OH, COOH, or SO3H; and M<1>, M<2> are H, alkali metal, or NH4. As a result, a photographic image free from silver stain and superior in finish is obtained.
