Abstract

PURPOSE: To save labors in the feed system of alumina, to improve working environment, and to extend the life time of electrolytic furnace, by allowing the lower end of the gas cover of the electrolytic furnace to contact with the crust just above the surface of the electrolytic bath.
CONSTITUTION: Crust crashing apparatus 1 is arranged at the outside of gas covers 5, 6 along the outer circumference of an electrolytic furnace for aluminum. A constant quantity of alumina discharged from a hopper 2 through a gate 7 slides down along the oblique surface of the gas covers 5, 6 and is charged to the crashing apparatus 1. The gas cover is divided into 5, 6, and the anode is exchanged by detaching the gas covers at required positions. The lower ends of the gas covers 5, 6 are sealed with alumina, hereby the furnace is closed tightly. A plate 9 preventing for alumina from being falled down is mounted to the furnace along the furnace circumference 8 in order to prevent the overflow of the alumina falling down along the oblique surface of the gas covers 5, 6 to the outside of the furnace, and to increase the quantity of alumina which covers the crust, thereby sealing the lower end of the gas covers 5, 6 tightly.
