Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate water efficiently from a coal-water slurry, by washing a coal powder, separated by adding an anionic surface active agent to a coal-water slurry, with a hydrocarbon oil.
CONSTITUTION: To a coal-water slurry containing a coal powder with a particle size of 5mm or less in an amount of 80wt% or less, an anionic surface active agent (e.g.: a fatty acid soap or a salt of an alkyl sulfate) is added in an amount of 10W 3,000ppm, pref., 100W1,000ppm against a coal (dry basis) to allow said coal powder to be easily precipitated and, thereafter, the coal powder and water are separated by filtering or centrifugal separation. Subsequently, the coal powder is washed by using a hydrocarbon (e.g.: kerosine or light oil) in an amount of 0.1W5wt. times, pref., 0.3W2wt. times against the coal (dry basis).
