Abstract

PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain an azo dye with excellent pigment suitability, industrially, by treating a specified azo dye with warming in a neutral or acidic aqueous suspension containing benzoic acid or benzoic acid and an inorganic acid, to convert into pigment.
CONSTITUTION: An azo dye of the formula is obtained by the diazotization of 1- amino-2-nitro-4-chlorobenzene, followed by coupling with 5-acetoacetylaminobenz- imidazolone. It is necessary to treat the compound for conversion into pigment, because it is composed of a hard particle which has no coloring power. Thus the compound of the formula is treated in a neutral or acidic aqueous suspension containing benzoic acid, or benzoic acid and an inorganic salt (e.g., sodium chloride and sodium sulfate), under normal or applied pressure, at about 40W150°C for about 3W20hr, to obtain a pigment with pigment suitability, composed of a smooth particle having no edge.
