Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare titled emulsion, useful as a sizing agent, a repellant, etc. for paper, by the preliminary emulsification of a higher fatty acid dimer in water in the presence of a specified emulsifier, followed by dispersion by the application of a powerful mechanical shearing force.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of at least one emulsifier, selected from a salt of a copolymer of styrene or an aromatic-substituted styrene derivative with an α,β-unsaturated polybasic acid (monoalkyl ester), a polyoxyethylene-styrene modified phenol ester sulfonate or sulfosuccinate, etc., is heated to 100W160°C under pressure, and mixed with a higher fatty ketene dimer, amide dimer or ester dimer, which has been molten at 100W150°C, in such a proportion that 1.0W15wt%, based on the dimer, of the emulsifier is contained. After the resulting mixture is emulsified at a pressure of 100W500kg/cm2 by the application of a powerful mechanical shearing force, it is quickly cooled, to obtain an aqueous emulsion, in which 90% or more of dispersed particles are of particle size ≤1μ.
