Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a display element which does not cause mottling and is suited for mass production even when the gaps between substrates are not uniform by forming one of the transparent substrates grasping liquid crystals so as to permit arbitrary orientation of liquid crystal molecules in arbitrary directions.
CONSTITUTION: This is a guest-host effect type liquid crystal element, wherein the parallel orientation treatment of orienting liquid crystal molecules in the same direction is applied to the substrate 1 alone so that with the other substrate 2 the liquid crystal molecules may be oriented in arbitrary directions. Thence, the liquid crystal molecules are oriented in the same direction by the substrate 2 alone and may therefore be rotated at their intrinsic pitch. Hence, the change in gaps results only in the continuous change of color tone, and mottling may thus be prevented. In this way, the mottling which has hitherto been caused with guest-host type liquid crystal display elements and in the case of panels where the gaps are not uniform may be effectively prevented; hence the display device which does not cause mottling and is suited for volume production may be obtained.
