Abstract

PURPOSE: A novel type coating material for paper that is produced by partial esterification of carboxyls in a specific copolymer from aliphatic unsaturated dicarboxylic monomers and others with polyether glycol or the like, thus being free from firing with flames and poisoning.
CONSTITUTION: An aliphatic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomer such as maleic acid or anhydride and an aromatic monovinyl monomer, preferably styrene or ethyl styrene are made to react at a molar ratio of 1/(0.5W5) to give a copolymer, preferably of 1,000W10,000 molecular weight. Then, a part of the carboxyls in the copolymer is esterified with a polyether glycol, preferably of 100W1,000 molecular weight, or monohydric higher fatty alcohol, preferably of 12W24 carbon atoms, preferably by 15W50%, to produce the coating material.
EFFECT: The material gives coating films with high friction, scratch, and blocking resistance.
