Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce titled polymer which exhibits a good effect in a wide pH range and is useful as a coagulant, by polymerizing acrylamide containing a specified compound, and after granulation, hydrolyzing a portion of the polymer.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous monomer solution, monomer concentration 10W 35wt%, containing acrylamide and 2W20mol% of a compound represented by the formula, wherein R1 and R2 are each H or a lower alkyl and M is an alkali metal is polymerized at -10W100°C in the presence of a polymerization catalyst comprising H2O2 and ferrous sulfate thereby to obtain a hydrated gel-like polymer. Next, the polymer is granulated into particles having an average particle diameter of 2W5mm, and then contacted with an aqueous solution of caustic soda or alkali carbonate to hydrolyze a portion of the acrylamide component of the polymer and thereby to form COOM groups. The hydrolyzed polymer is then dried at 40W130°C to a moisture content of below 10wt%.
