Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate oil content and water continuously with a compact device by performing separation under pressure of less than critical pressure by using a polyvinyl alcohol porous hollow fiber membrane having fine pores of specific mean pore sizes and maximum pore sizes.
CONSTITUTION: Oil and water are separated by using a polyvinyl alcohol porous hollow fiber membrane having fine pores of 0.01W0.05μm mean pore sizes and 0.05W0.4μm maximum pore sizes. At this time, the pressure used is made less than critical value P=2γ/r (γ is the interfacial tension difference between the oil layer and the water layer, and r is the radius of the fine pores existing in the hollow fiber membrane). If the pressure is below the critical pressure P, the oil content particles cannot pass the fine pores and only the water passes the fine pores; therefore, the oil content and the water may be separated. In addition, in the phase where the interfacial tension difference γ is determined, the critical pressure P is higher as the radius r of the fine pores is smaller, hence, this method is advantageous.
