PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of clamping work by providing stationary and moving devices to each of the plural work clamps mounted to carriage thereby fixing one of these automatically and moving the other in correspondence to the shape of the work. CONSTITUTION:First, a wedge member 47 which press-contacts a pit part 43 is moved upward by a cylinder 53 to make clamping devices 13a, 13b freely sliable with a carriage 11. The split nut devices 63 of the clamping devices 13a, 13b are engaged with a screw rod 61 and the devices 13a, 13b are moved to predetermined positions by turning of the screw rod 61. Next, the cylinder 53 of the clamping device 13a is operated to lower the wedge member 47 and fix. And the split nut device 63 of the device 13a is opened. Thence, while the wedge member 47 of the clamping device 13b is held open, the split nut device 63 is contracted and is meshed with the screw rod 61, thence the screw rod 61 is turned. Thence, the clamping device 13b moves along the carriage 11 and is positioned to a predetermined position.
