Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a stable cationic aqueous dispersion having excellent adsorptivity on negatively charged materials, by copolymerizing under pressure, ethylene with vinyl acetate in the presence of a cationic polymer containing a polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene and vinyl acetate are copolymerized under pressure in the presence of a cationic polymer having as at least one polymer component, a polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt having a quaternary nitrogen and represented by the formula, wherein R and R' are each a 1W20C alkyl, R" is a 1W20C alkyl or a 6W15C aromatic ring or alicyclic ring-containing group, R''' is a 2W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing one ethylenic bond and X- is an anionic group, so that the resulting copolymer has an ethylene content of about 5W40wt%. Exemplary of the polymerizable quaternary ammonium salt is 2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyl-oxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride.
