Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a fine direct positive image with an unprefogged internal latent image type silver halide emulsion by using a specified benzimidazole compound as an antifoggant to inhibit the fogging of the exposed part. CONSTITUTION:To a silver halide emulsion layer or a developing bath are added benzimidazole and its deriv. represented by the formula (where X is CR, R is H or lower alkyl and each of R<1> and R<2> is H, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NO2, OH, NH2 or COOH). Thus, the fogging of the exposed part and the appearance of a negative image in the highly exposed part are inhibited even in high temp. development especially at >=30 deg.C, and a superior internal latent image type direct positive image with high sensitivity and improved white ground is obtd. without lowering the image density.
