Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide the braking apparatus for use in an escalator or the like, which is capable of changing the braking torque depending on the direction of rotation, by disposing pivotal points of brake shoes eccentrically to the center of the brake shoes. CONSTITUTION:The brake shoes 4A, 4B are disposed axially symmetrically around the outer surface of a brake drum 2 which is fixed to a turning shaft. These shoes 4A, 4B are respectively connected via levers 7A, 7B to support pins P3, P4 which are fixed to an immovable part.Brake springs 8A, 8B are also disposed in an axially symmetrical manner. In order that the brake shoes 4A, 4B can be moved circumferentially to respective brake levers 7A, 7B, brake levers 7A, 7B are provided with respective guides 7Ag, 7Bg so that an angle theta can be changed. Here, if the setting angle theta is determined by the ratio of braking torque required for operating the escalator in each direction, a proper braking torque for both of ascending and descending operations of the escalator can be obtained.
