Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify glycyrrhizin industrially and advantageously without using expensive organic solvents, by bringing a licorice extract containing glycyrrhizin into contact with a specific styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer resin, and treating the glycyrrhizin adsorbed by the resin with an aqueous medium.
CONSTITUTION: A solution of a licorice extract containing preferably 5W15wt% glycyrrhizin is brought into contact with a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer resin having amino groups and adsorptivity due to the giant network structure, preferably Lewatit MP-62 or 64 (trade mark), etc. The solution is maintained weakly acidic at about pH6, and the glycyrrhizin is adsorbed by the resin. After separating the treated solution of the licorice extract, the resin is treated with an aqueous medium, preferably an alkaline aqueous solution, e.g. aqueous ammonia, to elute the glycyrrhizin.
