CONSTITUTION:A magnetic tape 3 having a plurality of recording tracks 6 is run along the running direction, and an arbitrary recording track 6 is selected, by moving a magnetic head 7 to the direction orthogonal to the running direction of the magnetic tape 3. At the waiting state where no selection of the recording tracks is made, the control means which locates the magnetic head 7 at almost the center of the magnetic tape 3, is provided. Thus, it is possible to perform quick and accurate access of the magnetic head 7 to each recording track 6 on the magnetic tape 3.
