Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of micro-arcing and arcing phenomena and form the defect-free weld zone by disposing plates each having a beam passage hole on the way of the beam passage of an electron gun for electron beam welding machines.
CONSTITUTION: The works 11 in a vacuum chamber 1 are melted by an electron beam 12 by an electron gun 8, and are thereby welded. In this case, the metal vapor produced by melting of the metals 11 to be welded and the gas contained in the metals 11 to be welded are released. These metal vapor and gas decrease the degree of vacuum in the electron gun 8, thereby causing the micro-arcing phenomenon by which the beam output is rapidly changed and the arcing phenomenon by which the beam is cut off, and thus producing defects such as dents 15, dropping 16 of molten metal, voids 17, etc. In order to prevent these defects, three plates 19 are disposed in the beam passage position of the front face of the metals 11 to be welded. The metal vapor and gas are captured between these plates 19, whereby the above- mentioned phenomena owing to the decrease in the degree of vacuum in the electron gun 8 is prevented from occuring and the weld bead surfaces are made into a defectfree state.
