Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture a briquette which has a high calorific value and generates less carbon monoxide, by electrically energizing a carbonaceous substance in a nonoxidative atmosphere for raising its carbonization degree.
CONSTITUTION: The elemental substance A, obtained from the solidification of the powder of coal, charcoal, etc., with the aid of a binder, e.g., polyvinyl alcohol, or starch, as needed, is inserted into the heating furnace 5 consisting of the furnace body 1, the electrode 2, the cover 4, and the constant-voltage control circuit 3 and then energized electrically through the electrode 2 leading to the constant-voltage control circuit 3 to obtain briquette having a high carbonization degree. Said treatment is preferably performed under the conditions of a pressure of approx. 1W20kg/ cm2 and a temperature of approx. 500W1,000°C, and also gas generated during the treatment is discharged through the hole 6 provided in the cover 4 and the hole 7 provided in the elemental substance A to the outside of the system.
