NEW MATERIAL:Maytansinoid compounds of formula I (when R1 is hydroxyl and R2 is H, R3 is H, alkzaoyl of 5 or less carbon atoms except the group of formula II; when R1 is H and R2 is hyroxyl, R3 is H, alkznoyl of 5 or less carbon atoms). EXAMPLE:C-15003epi-PHO-0. USE:Antibacterial, antiprotozoal, antitumorigenic or synthetic intermediate thereof. PREPARATION:A compound of formula III (R'3 is H, alkanoyl of 5 or less carbon atoms) is brought into contact with the culture medium of a specific microorganism or its treated product to produce a compound of formula IV. As the microorganism, is used, e.g., Streptomyces sclerotialus IFO-12246 or the like.
